En 1984, Françoise Sagan publie chez Gallimard Avec mon meilleur souvenir, composé de dix textes sur des rencontres et souvenirs marquants de sa vie.
Lettre d’amour à Jean-Paul Sartre, extrait :
« […] Bref, vous avez aimé, écrit, partagé, donné tout ce que vous aviez à donner et qui était l’important, en même temps que vous refusiez tout ce qu’on vous offrait et qui était l’importance. Vous avez été un homme autant qu’un écrivain, vous n’avez jamais prétendu que le talent du second justifiait les faiblesses du premier ni que le bonheur de créer seul autorisait à mépriser ou à négliger ses paroles, ni les autres, tous les autres. Vous n’avez même pas soutenu que se tromper avec talent et bonne foi légitimait l’erreur. En fait, vous ne vous êtes pas réfugié derrière cette fragilité fumeuse de l’écrivain, cette arme à double tranchant qu’est son talent, vous ne vous êtes jamais conduit en Narcisse, pourtant un des trois seuls rôles réservés aux écrivains de notre époque avec ceux de petit maître et de grand valet […] »
